In this Sunday’s sermon—June 18, 2017—we are going to continue with the series Familiar Scripture Passages. This week will be Romans 8:28-39, with the most attention focused upon verse 28: And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.NLT I’m using the New Living Translation here because of its simplicity. This verse has become one of the most read and recited verses in the Christian community the last few years and just in my opinion it’s partially because of the discontentment, worry, fear and anxiety which is becoming a norm in our culture here in the United States. We seem to have fallen into a “bad news” and “bad things” culture…we seem to see it dozens of times a day…it’s not only radio and television now…it’s Facebook and Twitter…with many more new technologies to follow in the coming years. Yesterday we saw and heard about the shooting of the Republican congress members and staffers practicing baseball…we also hear about the starving, beating and abuse of young girls and boys…we know of instances in our own families of death and suffering, doubt and fear. Sicknesses we do not understand…families that are torn apart…children whose lives are ruined by drugs…parents, grandparents and great-grandparents who seem to be existing in the horrible alter-life of Alzheimer’s and dementia. How in the world can God cause these things to work together for good??? Seriously!
Not to get too deeply into it here, but we have to remember one thing…God is God. He is not some god we have fabricated in our own mind…I’m sorry…if your “god” isn’t the great “I Am” of the scriptures…if your “god” agrees with everything you believe is right…or if your “god” is the man upstairs just waiting for you to do something wrong so he can “smite” you. We could go on with this forever…however, the God who created the universe, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob…the God who sent His only begotten Son a ransom for sin…the God who gave us the Ten Commandments…does not change. God is holy… God is sovereign… God is all-powerful…God is omnipresent…God is omniscient, God is love, God is just...listing a few of His attributes. And God has a plan…not just somewhere up in heaven sitting on a throne hoping everything works out…there is a reason for everything in our lives…every “good” thing and every “bad” thing…just like a trillion piece jigsaw puzzle slowly coming together…God is working everything out for those who love Him. Nothing in the life of a follower of Christ is for naught...God is working everything out for His glory.
When bad things happen, God works good through them…all things don’t work together for good…God works all things together for good. God takes the bad and makes good come from it...how and why? That comes in the next few verses of Romans 8…we’ll talk more about that Sunday.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
